We had an interview with the team which is behind the Greek presence at this year's event, aiming to provide direct support to a charity organization in Greece.
Can you tell us more about SMALL WORLD UAE?
Small World UAE is an annual charity event, founded in 2011, by Mrs Salam Hamzeh Ghaith and held under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Social Development of UAE. Its goal is to generate awareness of child related issues around the world and raise funds, to support charity organizations in different countries, who actively work with children in need. Funds raised will support and educate children worldwide and the distribution of funds is organized through Red Crescent UAE, ensuring transparency and reliability of the whole process.
Tell us more about this year's main event.
Small World UAE has been taking place for 3 consecutive years. This year, the main event of Small World UAE 2013 will be held on 30 November 2013, at the Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi. It is a black tie event and it will be a cultural celebration of the 15 participating countries. The evening includes tastes and performances from the participating countries and the organizers are striving for an exciting and memorable experience.
This year Greece has been included in the charity program. What is the Greek team's contribution to the event?
Prior to the event, we have been working closely with the Greek charity organization, "The Smile of a Child" (Hamogelo.gr), to ensure all required Red Crescent processes have been followed, in order for them to subsequently receive the funds as soon as possible. We are now in the process of selling invitations, as this is the main fundraising activity. During the event, we will have Greece represented in different ways, including selected Greek food in the menu and, hopefully, a Greek dance during the show! After the event, we will be closely monitoring the fund allocation process, in cooperation with the organizers.
How can Greeks living in UAE contribute to the success of the endeavor?
We would like to have as many Greeks as possible present at the event, as this would be the best country representation and the best way to support our own "Hamogelo" (The Smile of a Child) and charity organizations for children around the globe!
Are there any other activities that you are planning to do in the future?
We would like to keep on contributing to charity causes, especially those with a direct impact on Greece, provided that a transparent framework, such as Small World UAE, is in place. What we have found out in the process is that a lot of Greeks in UAE embrace and support these kinds of initiatives, so, definitely, we will be looking for more activities to join!
